A deeper dive into Zwift Running

As you probably can imagine by now, I’ve been doing a lot of running in the Zwift Platform. I’ve been on it now for over a year give or take a week or two. I did a couple of their built-in free training programs last winter to get prepared to train for my races last summer. Since I’d become a high school mountain bike coach through NICA and the Utah high school racing league I was riding so hard, way above my level, and had to decrease my running miles to almost nothing. I’d forgotten how to run.

There are not as many running training programs or workouts built into Zwift as there are for cycling, but there are enough to get you started, assuming you want to follow a program or do a virtual workout on your treadmill. Many of us are stuck on a treadmill at various times of the year for various reasons. This provides a great immersive environment to motivate and inspire you to run.

In the attached video here I’m in the middle of a workout that involves intervals, or periods of faster and slower running alternating to develop a specific muscle group or running skill. I won’t simplify it so much as to say it can make you faster, though that is one of the potential results. Sometimes intervals can train a weakness or skill like hill climbing or sprinting for the finish.

In this video we also get to see a sneak peek into the Garage. It’s a store where you can change your shorts and shirts, socks and shoes, your personal avatar appearance, and in Zwift Cycling your various bikes and wheels. You can either access and activate an item having earned it by leveling up, much like a video game, or using Drip Points, which you can see in my progress bar near the top of the video. I’ll point it out in an upcoming video.
